An eight-member delegation from Orleans, France, Wichita’s first sister city, is scheduled to tour Wichita for one week beginning Friday, April 4th. This sister city relationship began 80 years ago when Orleans, France was liberated from Nazi occupation on August 16, 1944 by the 137th Infantry Regiment of the 35th Division. The 35th division was an American army unit made up of primarily soldiers from Kansas (largely farm boys).
The City of Orleans has exchanged visits and gifts with Wichita since WW II. The eight visitors from Orleans are members of the OW-Wichita Sister City International relationship. They include an English teacher, a CPA, a pension fund company manager, a school care/food service assistant, an IT developer, and a legal professional.
The mission of Wichita Area Sister Cities is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time.
The April 4-12 tour includes Old Cowtown, Exploration Place, the Mid-America All-Indian Center, Botanica, Wind Surge baseball game, Wichita Symphony Orchestra rehearsal, Wichita Wurlitzer, architectural tours, and a sunset drive through the Flint Hills. Ceremonial tours will occur at the Joan of Arc statue and the Keeper of the Plains.
Monday, April 7, will feature a 3 p.m. public reception at Bleckley Foundation, 359 N. Mosley, with a tour of the WW I plane restoration. Army Command Sargent Major Istas from Ft. Leavenworth will attend.
Celeste Racette is President of Wichita Area Sister Cities, Inc. Her father served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a fighter pilot during World War II.
Many tour events are open to the public.
Check back often as new events will be added
